The first Vietnamese to successfully study Ramie

( Dantri news ) – 10 years of research and experimentation, not counting how many failures, so far Ms. Do Thi Thuy (1967) has succeeded with high quality fabrics woven from ramie bark.

“I know it’s hard, but I still do.”

Starting from a tailor, Ms.Thuy also has an understanding and passion for fabrics. Talking about the opportunity to come to ramie fabrics,Ms.Thuy confided: ” In the past, I met a research scientist who was very devoted to ramie, I was regularly listening about passion and wishing to study the traditional ramie fabric. But sadly, when he started working, it didn’t work out.

It was I who watched his fail and understood the pain. Naturally that makes me have feelings for ramie and determined to study ”.

From the beginning, she had determined that this would be a difficult road. Every time she failed, she told herself to try harder and after all that relentless effort was the birth of today’s “made in Vietnam” ramie product. ” I kept trying and finally succeeding,” Ms.Thuy said.

15,000 ramie trees were displayed at the Temple of Literature – Quoc Tu Giam.

Thinking back to the study of hemp, Thuy said: “During 10 years I did not know how many times I failed. When separating glue, it does not reach the quality, the fiber strength will not be guaranteed, the color is also not at will,… I had to try it over and over again, and it took a lot of effort and a lot of material. Even more difficult is that the workmanship of the worker is too new, I am the one you are looking for, so there is no place to learn from experience, so I keep breaking down and doing it again. ”

“Sweet fruit” for a decade’s journey

It took a decade to find a new path for traditional Vietnamese materials, but when designer Minh Hanh called it the “ancestor” of Vietnamese ramie, she still rejected it. She shared: “So far I feel like I haven’t done much. What I do comes from my passion for ramie. When the experiment was successful, I was very happy when the designers were very welcoming and appreciated. ”

In the world, hemp is a very popular product because of its material, high application speed and great potential. Therefore, she tried to tame 10 years of pursuing how to Vietnam has traditional materials.

Ms. Do Thi Thuy’s successful research into the production of fabrics from hemp bark is not only a great achievement for the fashion industry but also creates income opportunities, helping farmers escape from the difficulty of thinking about “what plants to grow, what animals to raise” for profit.

To produce the best quality ramie depends on the soil, climate and care process. “The time for ramie to reach maturity ” and can be harvested as a fabric is about 50-70 days, depending on the rainy weather many ramie will be “ripe” longer, more sunshine will “ripen” faster. When the bark of ramie has turned yellow, it will produce the best bark quality. When the input is of high quality, I will weave extremely high quality products, ”Ms.Thuy said.

Ms.Thuy said that the Central Highlands region is also a place where ramie can be grown but the fiber index is lower due to the harsh climate, the rainy season is too humid and the dry season is too barren, so the fiber index in ramie will be lower in areas with hot and sunny climate but still maintain the humidity as in Son La, Lang Son, Phu Tho and Thanh Hoa. These are also the areas where ramie is grown to produce the best quality.

Sharing the solitary journey of the Vietnamese “grandparents” of ramie, Designer Minh Hanh said: “For the past ten years, Ms.Thuy has been alone with the wrong people, groping for ramie. This material gives me a strong belief, surely Vietnamese fashion will really develop. Silk is likened to a beautiful, luxurious, expensive rich lady, but ramie are a genuine, pleasant and friendly girl.

Long ago, the image of the lady in the silk and the maid in the linen was imprinted in the subconscious. We haven’t had a proper sheet of ramie in ages. But now that it’s different, the position of the ramie is at a new level. We have the pride of a new quality traditional material to be able to sew Ao Dai. In the future, ramie will grow even more and have a certain place in the world. ”
